The Washington, D.C., theater collection documents the history of theater and the performing arts in Washington, D.C. from its beginnings in the early 19th century to the end of World War II. Genres of performances represented include burlesque, minstrel shows, music-hall concerts, opera, and operetta. Of twenty-eight major theaters represented, those figuring prominently include Albraugh's Grand Opera House, B.F. Keith's Theatre, the Belasco Theatre, Carroll Institute Hall, Ford's Opera House, the Lafayette Square Opera House, the National Theatre, Poli's Theatre, the Shubert Belasco Theatre, Theatre Comique, and the Washington Theatre.
